How different is small mouth bass from large mouth bass fishing?

well i am a large mouth bass fisherman and know alot about it basikly i think of myself as a semi pro but since i no longer live near the lakes i always fished and live near many local lakes with one public access and one spot to fish from shore (im a shore fisherman, i own no boats) the rest of the lake access are from houses along the entire lake so i questioned a techer about spots to fish and he pointed me towards the river near our area for small mouth. most of my lures are for large mouths like 5-8 inch senkos 4 inch hard swimbaits and medium to large crankbaits like rapalas and medium sized ratl-traps bass spinnerbaits and buzzbaits and inline spinners, are these still good for small mouths? there are a few largemouths in the river but not enough that i can target them only. so are the lures i have still work? im basikly asking what diference can i expect with lures and technique of fishing shuld i expect besides the fish and the fight they give.

ive caught my honest share of smallies on large mouth bait. also soft plastics work pretty good as well

you should get smaller lures so they can get it in there mouth.

if you are a self proclaimed semi pro you should know. But really since you aren't, go to the library and read all about all the semi stuff you need to know about. or don't! You might learn something, and reading about anything and everything is free. I suggest reading about both species even doing so on line on wikipedia would be a huge improvement from here-say you'll get here or anywhere. if you really hate libraries or you can't read it might be worth your while to at least learn to hit spell check. just that everything worth remembering you (everyone) needs to write down. the brain holds on to 60% more when it's written down so take some notes about the different types of baits, at what depths you need to present them at, in what colors they work best at all the different depths and in all the differentiating certain ways you can rig, present and retrieve them at. not to mention water clarity time of day water temperature and sunny or cloudy conditions. if you want to become a semi pro because you sacrificed a little time to be better at something you wanted to become better at. I commend you for that effort as learning is a very rewarding result of studying, I suggest reading books by the bass pros as well.

fish for both with dare devils

fantastic fishing

When fishing for small mouth, they have smaller mouth you must have known that already lol… so you need a smaller lure I prefer you use a medium size rubber fish or worm. Hope this helped good luck

Bass Fishing Tackle is The Most Basic Equipment for Fishing Bass

Bass fishing is a lovely way to relax. there are always a number of tournaments in the United States, which is the house of the bass among other parts of the world. Excellent Bass fishing tackle is something that is crucial to your success as a bass fisherman (or woman).

Bass fishing tackle – what makes it so special?

When you are boxing what do you always have with you? A pair of boxing gloves. When you go bass fishing, what do you keep with you at all times? your bass fishing tackle… not only that, but any other equipment that will speed you on your way to bagging that “big catch”. You’ll find that bass fishing tackle is slightly stronger than the normal tackle that is used for ordinary fishing, as it needs to be supple enough to be able to cast the lures far enough for glide fishing and other bass fishing techniques. From among various types of fishing equipment that you’ll use, the tackle is the most basic as well as the most vital.

If your tackle is not right then your fishing trip is doomed.

How to get the best bass fishing tackle

There are specialized fishing equipment departments who will be pleased to give expert advice and recommend the best brands available in the market. But, before you decide, if you aren’t 100% sure on what bass fishing tackle you are after (meaning you haven’t been recommended to buy a certain type) make sure that it comes with either a money back guarantee, or a trial period so that you can test it out to make sure you like what you are using. there is nothing worse then getting your bass fishing tackle, and it not fitting with your style.Bass fishing; a great sport

As one of the most popular sports, bass fishing attracts a lot of attention both as a leisure activity and as a profession. there are a number of tournaments organized every year where many people take part not only for the excitement of winning a prize, but also for the money prizes.

During this time, if you feel that you are excellent, you can test your skills against the best talents in the world. this is when you will know the importance of having top of the line equipment which becomes a total extension of yourself. If you win, not only will you take home a substantial cash prize, but you’ll also feel sure of yourself in the fact that you pitted your skills against the best in the world and came out on top.

I'll be going to penticton bc and would like to do some fishing. I am not a fly fisherman, but I would like to try someday. I'm more of a bass fisherman, but always like to try different stuff. does anybody know where to go, what lures to use? I'm not even familiar with all of the different species of fish in that area. what should we expect to catch? I wouldn't mind finding a guide maybe on one of the days, but I'd like to keep the cost down as much as possible. all advice about penticton will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Looking for that perfect gift for the bass fisherman in your life? well, don’t fret. the choices are wide and many, ranging from the ultra-thoughtful, to super-tacky (I personally delight in the tacky ones).

Gifts can be broken down into 3 major categories.

1. something to wear

2. something to look at

3. something to use

The obvious first thought on something to wear is the ever-well loved T-Shirt. they come printed with everything there is about bass fishing, real or imagined, ranging from masterpiece species drawings, to out-and-out piscatorial pornaography. many of these would be sure ringers for a Most Tasteless T-Shirt contest. This is where really knowing the person you’re buying for comes in handy. There are many places online to purchase these shirts, as well as Cabelas, Wal-Mart, and most malls. some places will even custom-print you a shirt with your own photographs. you can also buy software and transfer paper and make your own custom T-Shirts.

Next on the list is the ubiquitous baseball style hat. they are printed much like T-Shirts, with the difference being in the limited billboard space. Very few, if any, fisherman do not own and wear at least one baseball hat. Most of us feel there is always room for one more hat. Ditto on printed ties. I love to go to Lodge meetings with a picture of a dead bass tied around my neck! in my neck of the woods, these are even considered appropriate church attire, as long as your bib over-alls are clean. That’s with, or without the baseball hat.

Then, there are the serious fishing garments, offered by most outfitters. Specialty coats, rain coats, shorts, pants and shirts. these are fantastic pieces of clothing, except that the normal uniform for bass fisherman is shorts, Trilene or Stren baseball hat, T-Shirt, sandals, sunglasses, and a ,000-,000 bass boat! it could be a law; I don’t know! but the nice clothes are still appreciated. we wear them to church! in the something to wear category, what I do for gifts for bass fishermen and women is to tie Bass fly patterns on safety pins. they can be used as tie bars, brooches, hat pins, hair pins, and are always appreciated. they are unique and usually unexpected. many of my friends wear them to church! Knitting sweaters with bass on them are neat as well.

For something to look at, I’d suggest Bass Fishing Books, and videos. There are thousands to choose from and will provide hour and hours of entertainment and education for the Bass Angler in your life. next, there are thousands of beautiful prints, sketches and paintings depicting all aspects of Bass Fishing. many times, they can be had very reasonably.

Early Spring Large Mouth Bass?

OK, so im not much of a bass fisherman. I normally only fish for walleyes or northern so i dont know much about bass presentations. My school started a bass fishing club and i figured why not join. Well, so far no one has caught anything. We are fishing on Tampier lake, in Orland Park, Illinois. I've tried throwing spinner baits, Texas rigging worms and bouncing them along the bottom. I've tried rattle traps, stout raps, crawdad crank baits, and jigs to no avail. The weather had been extremely weird going from 60's and sunny to snow and 20's 2 days later with an average in the upper 40's. I dont know the temp of the water because i keep forgetting to bring a thermometer when i go. Ohh and we are fishing from the shore. Any suggestions? I know this is a long shot, but with sectionals right around the corner, im exhausting every option i have.

you need to know the temp of the water first. If it's below 55 degrees you need to fish a smaller bait like a jig or 4 to 5 inch worm. Fish it extremely slow and allow them to determine if they want it. When water temps go above 55 you use a larger bait like a 6" lizard or 7" worm. These are best to use on the shore as they can be rigged weedless. I prefer texas style, as that the simplest to use. try casting along plants and weeds growing in the water and under structure like overhanging branches and docks. Early in the morning and late in the evening try running a buzzbait along side these plant lines and around the structure.

As your other answerer stated, SLOW your presentation down! Texas rigged worms are fantastic right now. Also, what color worms have you been trying?

You will want to cast in the same spot 3-5 times and then move on as well.

If you are using anything but dark colored worms, try switching that up, move to black.

the water might be too cold, because of this the fish are probably in deeper water. try adding a little weight and cast farther, and pull it across the bottom, reaaallly! slow. Also try small baits, try yamamoto senkos 3-4 inches, texas rigged, probably green and fish them real slow. Also try them with jig heads they have fantastic action that way. honestly this is a little early for large mouth, small mouth are going to most likely be what you catch now if you do.

Those fish is thinking the same thing i would be thinking "Why's it so darn cold today?" and then the next day "Now, warm!!!" so, i would slow the presentations down, also down-sizing baits. Spray on attractants is another main factor in having no success and a good day of fishing. I like the powerbait sent, and they make some that particularly point to bass. Don't be worried of ruining lures with it, they will not. Place them on soft plastics as well as hard baits.

Power-bait spray on attractant – basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores…

As i said, down sizing baits is a main factor in cooler water bassin'. Stick to natural colors. Motor oil, dark reds, oranges, purples, all mimic some kind of natural prey looking food to fish, and especially bass. No hot pink/firetiger starting out. try the stand by motor oil. here is a list i compelled of the top 5 must try cold water bass baits, enjoy –

#1 bill Lewis Rat-L-Trap Mini-Trap – basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores… The 1/4 oz size is a big step down from 1/2 oz. you will see a very significant catch rate due to the smaller size of this world well-known lip-less crank. Bleeding shad is my all-time favorite pattern for any Rat-L-Trap type baits. that red really does stand out when fishing a murky lake.

#2 Strike King Mini-Strike Spinnerbait – basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores… Small in stature but, not in catch rates, this small panfish sized spinnerbait will take a lot of bass in fall, winter and early spring. Stay with the simple white pattern. it works nearly everywhere.

#3 Strike King Mini Pro-Buzz Buzzbait – basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores… Throw the white one on foggy, early mornings, and the black late at night for some vicious strikes when bass are a little more active. Pick up any color that you would like.

#4 Berkley PowerBait Original Power Worm 4" – basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores… Small, texas-rigged, 4" power worms will take a lot of bass. especially in highly pressured lakes, ponds, creeks, etc. I like motor oil like i mentioned in the first paragraphs.

#5 Gary Yamamoto Senko 4" – basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores… Finally, the last but not least, stand by wacky rigged senko. The senko is a versatile bait with an outstanding rating for catching fish. My favorite color? Black w/ blue flake.

Pleased fishing.

My high school had a bass fishing club, also! I never joined it 'cause I'm a girl and I was worried of out-fishing the guys and getting fed grief about it.

Y'know how MEN are when women want to try the "manly" things.

*rolling her eyes*

Really, my choice of bait for bass in the early spring/ spring is a simple jerkbait. Lots of the BASS pros have had lots of success on them. I prefer spendable ones really.

Now color choices……. Silver/Black Silver/Blue Silver/Purple

Early spring when the water is on the colder side (40's-50's), jerk slow smaller size because the bait fish aren't large.Warmer it gets, Larger sizes and quicker jerking and smaller pauses. it works on all lakes smallmouth and largemouth. Give it a shot!

Plastics, plastics, plastics!

A 6" Texas-rigged ox blood/red flake plastic worm worked ever so S-L-O-W-L-Y.
