We are still early in the season, but anglers are enjoying an increasing choice of target species from our local waters. Salmon, rockfish, lingcod, halibut and surfperch are all on the menu. besides the increasing possibilities for striped bass along the beaches, lucky anglers might even run into a foraging white sea bass or two.

Fishing for king salmon is holding steady, though catch rates were down a bit last week. Most boats averaged a fish per rod or slightly less, while some got skunked and others caught limits. Private boaters are searching the areas near Pajaro and the Soquel Hole as well as finding some fish further up the line near Three Trees and Davenport.

Jim Rubin on the Becky Ann caught seven salmon to 14 pounds on Sunday, fishing the beautiful north-coast area. On Monday, Rubin opted for the Pajaro area, netting four fish while trolling 30 to 60 feet down.

“We landed five salmon, including one 23-pound toad,” Tim Obert said. “All our fish came on a green flasher and green goblin hoochie from 120-150 feet down.”

Obert deckhands for Ultimate Charters out of the Santa Cruz Harbor and they were fishing near Pajaro and the Soquel Hole.

Todd Fraser continues to weigh in gorgeous kings at Bayside Marine and suggests Krippled Anchovies trolled early in the mornings for best results. Fraser is also seeing an increase in halibut coming in. Most are being caught with whole squid or sardines near the mile buoy area. Capitola Boat and Bait reported a few nice halibut caught this week, along with bolina rockfish and lingcods that frequent the same areas as the flatties. We can fish two rods for halibut, but remember to switch down to one rod only once you get a rockfish or ling onboard.

If you are targeting rockfish specifically, Surfer’s Reef, Pleasure Point outside the kelp, scattered reefs near the mile buoy and all along West Cliff reefs in 30 to 90 feet of water should continue to produce this week.

For the surfcasters, there are still plenty of big barred surfperch biting grubs, worms or sandcrabs along the beaches south of new Brighton. Rumor has it a few nice stripers have been hooked in that area as well. try dawn or dusk for the stripers. top water poppers, or small silver lures such as KastMasters are working for the bass.

The flipping artist received $3,156 for first place, a $2,000 bonus for the Ranger Cup program, and a $1,000 Evinrude contingency award.

“I had all my weight by 10:30 a.m. fishing water less than 4 feet deep,” said Walser, who attributed his success to a HydroWave electronic device that serves as a fish-feeding stimulant or “dinner bell” to fish.

Walser flipped docks but went slightly deeper when the docks yielded only small keeper fish. a jig and Zoom chunk fished at rocky places produced bigger bass.

New London’s Kevin Chandler, a former BFL winner at High Rock, provided the largest challenge bringing in five fish that totaled 16-07. He earned a check for $1,578.

Chandler fished spinnerbaits and jigs in the shallows to take his fish.

“I had five bites and weighed in five fish,” said Chandler, who made each bite count.

Lexington’s James Blankenship ranked third with15-12 and banked $1,052.

Other money winners were Calvin Young of Prince George, Va., fourth, with 15-04 for $736; Chris Turbyfill of Whitsett, fifth, with 13-11 for $631; Chad Poteat of Mt. Jeff Jennings of Rock Hill, S.C., took the huge-fish prize of $570 with a 5-pound, 15-ounce bass that struck a brown jig and Zoom plastic chunk.

Two of the top three co-anglers hailed from Thomasville.

Marty Williams placed first with 11-07 and collected $1,578; Chip Crews placed third with 10-09 and received $526. Crews also captured the co-angler huge-fish award of $185 with a 4-pound, 10-ounce bass.

Four Salisbury co-anglers finished in the money. They were David Vandezande, fourth, with 10-07, winning $368; Tommy Swicegood, sixth, with 9-10, winning $289; Jack Scott, ninth, with 7-00, winning $210; and Cecil Sargent, 11th, with 5-07, winning $166.

Rockwell’s Michelle Williams, a waitress at Steven’s Lakeside Restaurant near High Rock, received the loudest applause for her 10th-place end among the co-anglers. Williams had three fish totaling 6-01 that paid $184.

Other co-anglers receiving checks were Brandon Roper of Raleigh, second, with 10-12 for $789; Jerry Cross of Southern Pines, fifth, with 9-11 for $316; Vernon Adams of Durham, seventh, with 9-07 for $263; Steven Selfridge of McLeansville, eighth, with 7-04 for $237; Lawrence Aucoin of Charlotte, 12th, with 5-03 for $153; Robert Galvin of Zebulon, 13th, with 4-09 for $147; and Jeff Claiborne of Suffolk, Va., 14th, with 4-06 for $139.

BFL competitors anticipated a slow bite at High Rock, and they were correct. Only 15 five-fish limits were taken by the 74 boaters and only one five-fish limit by the 74 co-anglers.

Ron and Carmen Nelson won Saturday’s Adam & Eve Trail tournament at Tuckertown Lake with 19 pounds, 3 ounces, and shared $250.

Neal and Pat McDonald captured the second-place prize of $150 with 14-15. They also claimed the huge-fish award of $100 with a 4-pound, 10-ounce bass.

Ben and Treithler Ragan ranked third with 12-05 that paid $100.

The Adam & Eve Trail will hold a special father-daughter or father-granddaughter tournament June 23 at Badin Lake out of the Lakemont ramp. The entry fee is $25.

Some 8,000 pounds of channel catfish in the 1- to 3-pound class will be stocked in the lake, limit one fish per kid. Free bait, free loaner tackle, free fish cleaning and free instruction are all available.

Those with their own tackle are encouraged to bring it, but remember that lead sinkers are not allowed at Horseshoe Lake. It’s also the perfect occasion to try out your grandpa’s “secret” catfish bait recipe. there will be a separate area for the tiniest anglers age 1 to 5, and an aquarium display featuring the aquatic life in Horseshoe Lake will be presented by the Chico Area Flyfishers.

To minimize the event’s impact on Horseshoe Lake’s local fish population, any kid who manages to catch and release one of the resident largemouth bass, carp or bullheads that inhabit Horseshoe Lake year-round will be rewarded with a new rod and reel courtesy of the Chico Bass Club.

The yeoman job of cleaning those thousands of catfish falls to the Chico Rotary Club. Both the Sunrise and Noon Rotary have been stalwart volunteers and financial donors since the event’s inception. The Chico Bass Club and dozens of additional volunteers worked Thursday evening to rig up the hundreds of loaner rods with the special Danielson “Enviro-Quest” steel sinkers that are required by Bidwell Park’s “lead-free” regulations.

The public is invited to view the fish stocking at noon today, but once the fish are stocked, fishing will be closed for the day until Saturday morning. This is a “kids only” event, so no fishing license is required, and no fishing by adults is allowed.

Refreshments like water, sodas, hot dogs and snacks will be available from local Chico Boy Scout Troop 3, which will also have coffee and Danish in the morning. Shuttles will be running from the entrance of upper park. a Facebook page has also been set up.

Chairman of the organizing committee Pete Giampaoli said, “Our goal is to give every local kid a positive first-time experience with a wholesome outdoor activity they can participate in for their entire lives, and also have a really excellent chance to catch a fish.”

Oroville kids fishing day

Oroville residents have their own free kids fishing event coming up soon, with the “Hooked on Fishing” Oroville edition taking place on June 2 at Bedrock Park. a mixture of catfish and steelhead will be stocked in the lagoon, and a separate area for kids with special needs will be provided.

Fantastic white bites kayak

Angler Joey Nocchi of Paso Robles will think twice before paddling his kayak out into the kelp beds off Central California’s Cambria again. Nocchi was fishing near shore at Moonstone Beach on Saturday, when an estimated 12- to 14-foot fantastic white shark chomped down on his kayak and knocked him out of it. The big predator then swam right over the upturned kayak while ignoring Nocchi.

In typical fantastic white fashion, the shark immediately lost interest and backed off, allowing the untouched Nocchi to get his now water-filled vessel safely to shore. The attack took place about 15 miles from where former Chico resident Deborah Franzman was killed by a fantastic white while swimming about 75 yards out in 2003.

The DFG planted catchable-size trout this week in the following area waters: Butte County — Butte Creek big, Paradise Reservoir; Shasta County — Baum Lake, Lower-Middle-Upper Burney Creek, Small Cow Creek, Grace Lake.

Lake Erie: Charter captains reported huge lake trout catches at about 55 feet as the fish continued their migration to deeper waters, and anglers reported heavy perch activity in 45-55 feet and in Presque Isle Bay. when smallmouth bass in the hundreds entered Sixteenmile Creek on a spawning run, Bob Stevens of Bethel Park caught 25 on live minnows while a fly fisherman landed five on Clouser minnows. Other anglers reported consistent smallmouth action near Presque Isle's north and south piers. On inland waters and Lake Erie, bass season opens June 16. Northern pike and muskellunge were biting at Presque Isle State Park's Marina Lake.

Pymatuning Reservoir (Crawford County): Sublegal walleyes continued to be active.

Conneaut Lake (Crawford County): Heavy perch activity was reported and a 36-inch northern was released may 15.

Lake Wilhelm (Mercer County): good crappie catches were reported near Sheakleyville, but just a few anglers were spotted near the causeway and marina.

Neshannock Creek (Lawrence County): Conditions were good at Volant. Fishing was best on cool mornings with strong hatches of March browns, light cahills, tan caddis and some sulphers.

Ohio River (Beaver County, West Virginia): Catches of drum, striped bass and smallmouths were reported. the Chester Newel Sportsmen Club's Ohio River Catfish Tournaments will launch may 19 and run periodically through Aug. 18. Call 304-387-3982 for details.

Monongahela River (Allegheny County): several smallmouths were released by morning anglers plugging the South Side shoreline.

North Park Lake (Allegheny County): good fishing continued as the water temperature warms. An in-season state stocking of rainbow trout occurred may 10.

Deer Creek (Allegheny County): may 11 the state stocked browns and rainbows from the golf course to the “huge bend” a quarter mile below Rich Hill Road.

Deer Lakes (Allegheny County): Rainbows were stocked by the state in all three lakes may 11.

Twin Lakes (Westmoreland County): Rainbow trout continued to be caught in both lakes, with mornings and evenings most productive.

Donegal Lake (Westmoreland County): good trout fishing from shore was reported.

Cross Creek Lake (Washington County): Slab crappies as long as 133???4 inches were caught. Chris Witt and Ed Owad of Robinson had a field day hooking crappies up to 1 pound, 4 ounces. Walleyes were few and far between.

High Point Lake (Somerset County): Catches of largemouth bass, a few smallmouths, northern pike, chain pickerel and some crappies were reported.

Yellow Creek Lake (Indiana County): a light walleye bite, and crappies were hit or miss, while night anglers reported catching huge catfish.

LAFAYETTE: The catfish bite is very excellent, best with nightcrawlers or chicken livers. Trout bite has slowed with the warmer water temperatures. Trout will not be planted again until the fall. Catfish plants will begin in the summer. Bass bite has been solid. (925) 284-9669

LEXINGTON: Bass fishing is excellent for those soaking jumbo minnows. some catfish are stirring. (408) 463-0711

LOCH LOMOND: Bass fishing continues to be decent, especially when the wind stays down. Bass are swimming in the shallows. sometimes attacking lures, other times ignoring. Next week the lake will receive 2,000 pounds of trout. It’s the first plant since 2008. (831) 335-7424

LOS VAQUEROS: Trout fishing is excellent. Most get a few fish per outing. a 6.9 pound trout was caught last week. Trout average two pounds. Another plant may go in before Memorial Day. QUARRY LAKES: Largest fish of the week were caught by Fred Martinez of Newark, who caught six and seven pound catfish with hot dogs. Trout fishing is honest. The Peninsula or the backside of the lake is where the action is. Power Bait, Power Eggs or nightcrawlers. (510) 544-3130

SHADOW CLIFFS: Largest fish of the week was a seven pound trout caught by Jerry Esquero from the first. Most shoreline anglers get two to three fish per day with Power Bait. The island pond is producing quality bass fishing for those using Senkos. (510) 544-3230

NAPA: Sturgeon bite is decent on the southern part of the river. Striped bass are spread throughout the river. larger fish take live bite. Action is very scattered. Sweeney’s Sports (707) 255-5544

RUSSIAN: Shad have arrived in excellent numbers. The evening bite is better than the morning. Best access is at Johnson’s Beach. Steelhead Beach, Casini, Vacation Beach and Monte Rio are worth trying. Most are swinging flies with type 2 or 3 shooting heads. Spincasters are using mini-jigs. BENICIA: Ninth Street, 12th Street have been producing 15 to 18 inch stripers. Most catch two or three per outing. Sturgeon are biting at Buoy 2 and big cut. (707) 745-4921

FRANK’S TRACT: Black bass fishing is very excellent. use Senkos, frogs or buzzbaits. There are bass on beds and in post-spawn. Target depths of two feet to eight feet. The Yamamoto Open is scheduled this weekend and open to the public. call for registration info. (925) 625-2441

RIO VISTA: Striped bass fishing is excellent on the San Joaquin side near Eddo’s where DFG is releasing juvenile salmon. at Isleton, there’s excellent bait fishing and trolling with Yozuri Minnows, P-Line Predator and broken-back Rebels. a 40 pound striped bass was caught from the Main Street Pier. BERKELEY: The El Dorado on Wednesday took eight anglers to limits of salmon to 17 pounds while fishing near Deep Reef. On Sunday, three boats with 38 came back with 70 salmon with more than 20 larger than 20 pounds. (510) 235-2032, (510) 849-3333, (510) 223-5388, (707) 334-4827

CAPITOLA: Skiffs are getting rock cod, ling cod off Soquel Point. Local reefs hold fish. Inside reefs seem to be better than the outside reefs. Stripers are moving in and out of Manresa and new Brighton beaches. There are shiner perch and small walleye perch off the pier. (831) 462-2208

EMERYVILLE: last salmon trips were Saturday and five boats scored anywhere from less than a fish per rod to just over a fish per rod. Largest was 19 pounds. Bay potluck trips trolling with frozen anchovies are scratching very few stripers and halibut. (510) 654-6040

PILLAR POINT: Queen of Hearts on Tuesday had 15 salmon to 21 pounds for 22 anglers. More than 40 salmon were hooked, some were lost,others were shakers. The first rock cod trip of the year went out Wednesday and by mid-morning had five lings to 14 pounds fishing south of Pigeon Point. Striped bass in various sizes, depending on the school, range 3 to 4 pounds and 9 to 12 pounds. Occasionally, fish to 17 pounds are in the mix.

Angling appears to be best on the San Joaquin River side in favorite haunts such as three Mile Slough, old River Flats, in a stretch of the main river from Eddo’s to the Antioch Bridge and into the central Delta along Potato Slough.

Trollers run mainly deep-divers in Georgiana Slough, Mokelumne River and along three Mile Slough and the area known as “peacocks.”

Some boaters graph schools and drop spoons and jigs for nonstop action.

On the anchor, threadfin shad, shrimp and pile worms are key baits on the main San Joaquin River and on the Sacramento River side along Sandy Beach Regional Park, West Bank, Decker Island, Horseshoe and Collinsville – all below Rio Vista.

Black bass fishing is good, too, with wacky-rigged plastics, swimbaits in the bluegill pattern and crankbaits in chartreuse and crawdad orange colors. The so-called “reaction baits” will draw the most action, mainly 2- to 3-pound largemouth, and the occasional double digit bass goes for plastics and swimbaits.

Near Pittsburg, shrimpbaits target both striped bass and sturgeon at the same time. Some limits reported on both species over the weekend during the minus tide.

Ocean - Rock cod fishing opened may 1 with a bang for charters south of Pigeon Point, with 10-fish limits reported by Santa Cruz and Monterey harbors. The heavy wind scattered salmon, reducing the take to less than one per rod. Pods of krill keep showing outside Fort Ord, so when the wind ceases, salmon fishing should improve.

The best salmon action is 13 miles out from Half Moon Bay, reported Roger Thomas of Salty Lady Sportfishing. After being forced to the dock since may 2, boats ran Sunday to claim better than a king per rod. Average size is 9 to 12 pounds, up to 34 pounds. Bodega Bay was hampered by a strong northwest wind and scores plummeted, except for private skiffs that stayed close to port. Mark the calendar: Rock cod fishing opens north of Pigeon Point on June 1.

San Pablo Bay – Pretty subdued by wind, holding down what should have been a banner weekend for sturgeon. Halibut fishing is slow, though the occasional 12-pounder is hooked on live minnows at Paradise. At the top of the tide, worm-tailed jigs produce small-sized striped bass along San Quentin, the brickyards and Marin Islands. good news: The pesky crabs have vacated the shallows, according to Keith Fraser at Loch Lomond Live Bait in San Rafael.

American – Ron Halvorson at Thornton Road Bait reports thick schools of shad holding above Discovery Park, near the confluence of the Sacramento River. in fact, shad have went all the way to Paradise Beach and Watt Avenue.

Feather – The lower part yields no end to striped bass to 12 pounds, mainly on bait and live jumbo minnows. Shad are at the mouth of the Feather and up through Shanghai Bend near Yuba City.

Sacramento – Freeport Bait reports very good shad fishing at the bridge, brickyards and Miller Park. School-sized stripers are in the same stretch, getting after pile worms and minnows.

Amador – Trout fishing for 3- to 12-pound trophies is solid, especially for boaters who either troll or dunk bait in the Carson Creek arm.

Camanche – More consistent for largemouth bass than trout. Chartreuse crankbaits or green-brown plastics take loads of bass, mainly in the shallows. Trollers run 25 to 30 feet down for rainbows averaging 18 inches.

Frenchman – Very good for high plateau rainbows to 18 inches. Flat tubers do well with green or black wooly buggers. Trollers pulled flashers and nightcrawlers while bank anglers toss Power Bait. Campgrounds such as Frenchman, Chilcoot, Huge Springs and Huge Cove are open. Fishing the stream below the dam is wide open.

Hogan - Bruce Hamby of Sierra Sportfishing is hooking 3- to 5-pound striped bass – about three per rod – slow-rolling shad pre-soaked in Pro Cure oil. he calls the bite “consistent.”

McClure – King salmon, 14 to 20 inches, bite well from the A-Frame to Temperance Bay, down 40 to 80 feet. Shad and anchovies do the number.

New Melones – Kokanee, 11 to 14 inches, are starting to perk, but the bite is anything but red hot. Trout to 3 1/2 pounds have pulled away from the shore and went into deeper environs. Rainbows respond to trollers, 10 to 30 feet down. Spotted bass action is nonstop in the shallows on soft plastics and Senkos worked “wacky” or “drop shot.” Reaction baits are very productive, as well. Free fishing seminars are held at 1 p.m. Sundays at Glory Hole Sports in Angels Camp.

Pardee – Water is pouring from the dam to generate hydroelectric power. Trollers work hard to hook a mix of small-sized rainbows and kokanee, pulling an Uncle Larry’s Spinner tipped with corn. Buoy lines at the dam and south end seem best. Rare double-digit largemouth bass are hooked on plastics using the drop-shot method.

Pinecrest – Water is low but boats can launch. Fish and Game is stocking catchable-sized trout weekly. Shoreline casting or drifting in a boat with Power Bait is all it takes.

Silver – Field scout Bill Schwartz said this drive-to lake off Highway 88 is ice-free and beautiful, but roads around the picturesque impoundment haven’t been plowed. Nearby Caples Lake is fishable, as well.

Spicer – The Forest Service road is open, though the boat docks still aren’t in place. The water level is low. Field scouts Steve and Bonnie Lucero strung limits of rainbows to 17 inches off the bank this week, dunking Power Bait. Float tubers pull wooly bugger flies for quick limits. The average trout measures 13 to 14 inches, with a heavy girth.

White Pines – Literally stuffed with catchable-sized trout, reachable from the shore. The annual “One Glide” fishing contest is Saturday, sponsored by the Calaveras fly Fishing Club. Proceeds support scholarships for Bret Harte High students. to sign up, contact White Pine Sporting Goods in Arnold. White Pines is a fantastic destination for families. Motorized boats are not allowed.

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah is one of 19 states that are holding a “Wanna go Fishing for Millions” contest this year. The contest is sponsored by Cabela’s.  

The contestant who catches a fish that has a tag on it will be eligible for some big prizes. In one of the 19 states, a fish has been tagged with a tag worth $1 million. The grand prize will be doubled to $2 million if the person who catches the fish had Cabela’s Fish Recon app on his or her smartphone before he or she caught the fish.    

Other prizes include two Ranger 520Z Bass Series Comanche boats and trailers with Evinrude outboard motors, valued at $65,000 each, as well as more than $20,000 in gear from Costa sunglasses, Abu Garcia and Rapala.   

The following are the Utah lakes and reservoirs and number of fish with tags:

Northern Utah: Bear Lake, 17 cutthroat trout; East Canyon, 18 rainbow trout; Mantua, 8 largemouth bass; Willard Bay, 12 walleye wiper.

North-central and central Utah: Grantsville, 8 rainbow trout; Gunnison Bend, 8 channel catfish or white bass; Utah Lake, 16 white bass or channel catfish.   

Northeastern Utah: Starvation, 11 walleye or rainbow trout.  

Southeastern Utah: Joes Valley, 9 of all trout species; Lake Powell, 23 striped bass or smallmouth bass; Paragonah Lake, 8 rainbow trout; Sand Hollow, 9 bluegill or largemouth bass.

Boswell was first in the 15-18 age group to qualify for the TBF Junior World Championship on Lake Lanier near Atlanta this summer.

Dustin Bozeman of the Junior Hawg Hunters finished second behind Boswell with 14.43 pounds. Mason Brown of the Tallahassee Junior Bassmasters was third with 13.26 pounds.

In the 11-14 age group, Colby Cowart of the River City Christian Youth Club in Jacksonville was the champion with 12.45 pounds, including the huge bass of 5.81 pounds. He also qualified for the World Championship.

Jacob Groene of the Junior Hawg Hunters finished second with 9.20 pounds. Ryan Kirchner of the River City club had 8.06 pounds for third.

ELITES ON DOUGLAS

The Bassmaster Elite Series makes its fourth stop of the season today through Sunday on Douglas Lake east of Knoxville, Tenn.

Lakeland brothers Bobby and Chris Lane, and rookie Kyle Fox of Lakeland, are in the field. Weigh-ins start at 4:15 p.m. and are live online at bassmaster.com.

BASS TOURNAMENTS

Bobby Wooten and Chad Stewart piled up a two-day weight of 59.38 pounds to win the Accent Marine/Camp Mack Appreciation Tournament Saturday and Sunday on the Kissimmee Chain. Jeff Crandon and James Pearson finished second with 52.27 pounds. Tim Burton and Chris Rand placed third with 48.63 pounds, followed by William Hendren and Richie Upchurch with 46.94 pounds. Scott Perry and Richard Anthony had 45.24 pounds for fifth. Doc Swango and Brian Malys boated the largest bass on Saturday, 9.51 pounds, and Rich Howes and Kyle Walters weighed in a 10.09-pounder on Sunday.

Lee Howlett of Lakeland and C. Henman combined for a five-fish stringer totaling 30.59 pounds with a 10.32-pounder on Sunday to win the Bass Champions Senior Tour event on Lake Toho. Bobby Wooten and Randy Mosely finished second with 26.55 pounds, followed by Joe Lewis and Tane Crossley with 18 1/2 pounds.

Dillon Johnson and Corey Ashe won the Sunday Open Series tournament on the north Winter Haven chain with 19 pounds, 6 ounces, including the largest bass of 7 pounds, 6 ounces. Robert Chencinski and Peter Petriw took second with 14 pounds, 2 ounces. Steve Coleman Jr. and Steve Coleman Sr. placed third with 13 pounds, 1 ounce.

Rennie Gauvin and Dennis Smith took huge-bass and overall honors in the Outcasts Bass Club tournament on Lake Okeechobee Saturday and Sunday with 34.92 pounds and a 7.36-pounder by Smith. John Myers III and Pablo Canels took second with 34.67 pounds, while third went to Matt Bedenbaugh and Michael Bedenbaugh with 28.01 pounds.

Willard Combee and Jack Alward took huge-bass and overall honors in the Ron’s Tackle Box evening tournament last Thursday on Eagle Lake with 15 pounds, 2 ounces and a 5 3/4-pounder. Ismael Garcia Jr. and Ismael Garcia Sr. finished second with 11 1/2 pounds. Third went to Billy and Mike Bechard at 10 1/2 pounds.

Bob and Lorene Wehrly won the ABA Couples tournament on Lake Rousseau Sunday with 12.69 pounds. Bobby and Judith Johnson placed second with 10.28 pounds with the largest bass of 4.66 pounds.
