The Paducah Sun – Metropolis tournament shows Ohio River catfish flourishing still hungry

Results of the recent Cabela’s King Kat Tournament Trail event based from Fort Massac State Park at Metropolis, Ill., underscore a couple of things: 1. The catfish population in the Ohio River is doing just fine, thank you. 2. The blazing hot weather of late doesn’t seem to spoil the appetite of the whiskered fish. Last weekend’s catfishing competition drew anglers from nine states despite torrid, sweat-soaked conditions that seemed to be more troubling for the fishermen than they were for the fish. Indications of diminished activity by the catfish were lacking. First-place finishers Jeff Dodd of Trenton, Tenn., and Chris stout of Jackson, Tenn., brought in a five-fish tournament limit of catfish weighing 151.95 pounds. right, they averaged more than 30 pounds per blue catfish that they put on the scales. The Dodd-Stout team didn’t do it through the strength of a single enormous catfish, either, although they had a really nice one at 41.25 pounds. rather, they just didn’t have to weigh any small fish. All their keepers were impressive, each of which effectively would have been the fish of a lifetime for many anglers. (Let’s not forget that many mortal fishermen would do double back flips just for the chance to catch just one fish of 20 to 30 pounds.) The winners reported catching really more than 20 catfish during the day by fishing skipjack at 32-34 feet deep in an area about seven miles upriver from Metropolis. Kentuckians Joshua and Ricky West of Bardwell were runners-up with a limit of blue cats weighing 134.05 pounds. They took that ponderous haul baiting with skipjacks and fishing some 35-40 feet deep in an area on the Ohio about five miles downstream from the tournament base. Paragould, Ark., team Daryl and Jason Masingale were third with a limit (culled from 15 fish caught) weighing 122.85 pounds. They averaged almost 25 pounds for their keeper cats by soaking skipjacks down 30 to 50 feet deep in the area between the I-24 and the Irvin Cobb/U.S. 45 bridges. another pair of Kentuckians, Tim and Eric Aldridge of Cunningham, finished in fifth place overall with a 117.50-pound limit. But they also claimed the award for the single heaviest fish, a blue cat that tipped the scale at 54.70 pounds. While a fantastic deal of fishing activity has been deferred by this blistering summer weather, it seems that area catfish at least haven’t been shrinking from the heat. n Naturalists of the Land Between the Lakes’ Woodlands Nature Station will host and guide an evening canoe trip on Lake Barkley 7-9:30 p.m. Aug. 13. Participants will gather at a location to be announced, then launch canoes, all gear provided. Shoreline wildlife will be in focus in remaining daylight, then the nature watch will shift to nocturnal creatures as moonlight ensues. Participation is $25 per canoe, with reservations and full deposits required. The fee also covers same day admission to the nature station. call 270-924-2020 to make reservations or for more information. n Kids ages 16 and younger are welcome to dig into a free flurry of outdoor activities at Paducah Shooter’s Supply’s Small Sportsmen Back to School event 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Aug. 13 at and around the shop’s 3919 Cairo Road location. a junior duck calling contest is planned, while sack racing, hayrides and face painting may appeal to some of the younger kids. Nearby range space will allow trap shooting, .22 rifle target shooting and archery. All are free, saving trap shooting, which is $10 a round — or free with any $100 purchase at the store. Decoy and 3-D hunting and decoys games are slated, as are duck banding and dog demonstrations. Giveaways will come at intervals and one Small Sportsmen registrant will collect a free firearm. call 443-3758 for more information. n The Illinois Department of Natural Resources proposal for waterfowl seasons and a fourth waterfowl hunting zone instead of three has approval from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. That means this 2011-12 hunting year will bring into play a new South Central zone layered in between the existing and reconfigured South and Central zones. The new zone’s southernmost area includes part of northwest Union County, all but the southeastern corner of Jackson County, and northern parts of Williamson and Saline counties. Approved by the USFWS were 60-day duck seasons and 66-day Canada goose seasons for 2011-12 in both the South and the new South Central zones. The South Zone duck season will be Nov. 24-Jan. 22 while the zone’s Canada goose hunting will be Nov. 24-27 and Dec. 1-Jan. 31. Duck hunting in the new South Central Zone will be Nov. 12-Jan. 10, while the South Central Canada goose dates will be Nov. 12-27 and Dec. 13-Jan. 31. For more details, including a map of revised waterfowl zoning, see the website dnr.illinois.gov. n Mayfield’s David Young scored a “money” finish when the FLW Tour recently made a swing to Pickwick Lake at Florence, Ala. Young — fishing way upstream from his regular haunts on the Tennessee River chain’s Kentucky Lake — sacked two five-fish limits in the tournament’s preliminary rounds to total 25 pounds, 10 ounces with the 10 fish. It tallied 49th place among FLW pros, still paying off to the tune of $7,892. Pro mark Rose of Marion, Ark., won the tournament. in four sessions, he caught 20 bass of 77-11 to claim $125,000 in winnings. another Kentuckian, Kevin Snider of Elizabethtown was runner-up among pros, finishing second with four limits weighing 72-10 total.

Where do i look for one
Im under 18
I live in Illinois i found some but they all say that you have to be 18 years or older

That is very right , but if you look at the very bottom , you will usually see a consent form to be signed by your parents saying theey know you are entering and that they give their permission for such . If you don't see it on the form , then call them and ask them.

GRAFTON — Learn to fish or become a better angler at the Two Rivers Family Fishing fair.

The free fair is held in observance of Illinois Free Fishing Days and National Fishing and Boating Week. The fair offers fishing fun and educational activities for the entire family.

The Fishing fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 11, at Grafton’s Pere Marquette State Park, which is the host of the event administered by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, and co-sponsored by Two Rivers National Wildlife Refuge, administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. there will be many informational stations for beginning anglers and lots of fun and educational activities for kids of all ages.

A 20th anniversary ceremony honoring the fair, its founders and organizers will be held at noon at the aquarium. there is no charge to attend the Fishing fair or to catch a fish. No license or fishing gear is needed. Food and refreshments will be available at the fair.

Fairgoers will learn knot tying, fish identification, fish cleaning, casting and many other skills. Every child who completes at least seven stations will receive a prize and have the chance to catch a trout at the Trout Pond.

Some favorite stations returning this year are the Bluegill Pond, where the children will have the opportunity to catch a fish and have their photo taken at the first Fish Photo Station; Virtual Reality Fishing; the Lil Angler Tub for youngsters to catch a jumping bass; and the well loved One-Cast station where everyone wins a prize, along with the well loved Bowfishing Stations where children can shoot in a pool and at a 3D target.

There are three new stations this year, including the Excellent Fishermen Station by Girl Scout Troop 907, teaching the Excellent Fishermen rules. Prizes can be won at The Nature Institute’s Fish Jeopardy station by answering fishing-related questions, and the Sierra Club’s Recycled Fish Mobile Station will teach how to make a koi fish mobile from ancient newspapers. Bluegrass musician and storyteller Wayne Schell will entertain while lunch is served in the main tent. And Camo the Clown will be returning with his educational seminars. Fredbird also will appear again this year at 1 p.m. at the fair.

This year’s sponsors are ConocoPhillips of Wood River and Cabela’s of St. Charles, Mo.

“Over the past few years, the fair has been able to grow due to the help of our sponsors,” said Suzanne Halbrook, public relations director for Alton Regional Convention and Visitors Bureau. “Cabela’s support is in line with the company mission to reach out into the community, helping events that promote the continued growth of a healthy, outdoor lifestyle and to help form the next generation.”

Once again, the fair also will feature the giant 4,000-gallon mobile aquarium, stocked with many of the local fish found in the Illinois River. Fish Tub seminars will be presented by professional anglers all day, including local experts demonstrating a variety of fishing techniques.

New this year are a Dog Retriever demonstration and a Noodling demonstration at the aquarium.

Illinois Free Fishing Days is held in observance of National Fishing and Boating Week. Anyone wanting to try fishing can do so without a state fishing license from June 10 through 13.

National Fishing and Boating Week gives millions of Americans the opportunity to celebrate the joys of fishing and outdoor recreation.

“We want to help the youth learn more about fishing, so they can experience the excitement and relaxation fishing offers,” Halbrook said.

Contact Pere Marquette State Park at(618) 786-3323 ext. 1 or Two Rivers National Wildlife Refuge at (618) 883-2524 for more information.
