June 11 – ABA Weekend SeriesJune 18 – Wal-Mart BFL TournamentJune 23-25 – FLW Everstart SeriesJune 25 – FLW National Guard College SeriesJuly 30 – Northern Bass SupplySeptember 14-17 – Wal-Mart FLW Tour

Angler snags 11-pound bass at High Rock

That Sunday marked the first day of spring. that day was also the first time Alvin Williams of Huntersville fished High Rock Lake.

Williams, a store manager at best Buy in Kannapolis, went crappie fishing with Gerald Wilkes of Mocksville, who has a family lake house in second Creek. The two buddies set out in an aluminum boat in second Creek to target slab crappie.

One stop put them at a small point where Williams made repeated casts with his Bass Pro Shops ultralight rod-and-reel combo after he thought he felt something nip at the small jig and plastic bait he had tied to the end of his 4-pound-test Stren line.

“I felt a couple of bumps so I kept casting to the spot,” said the 36-year-ancient store manager.

Williams eventually had a solid strike, and the fish immediately took out line making the reel’s drag groan.

“The fish never came up so I couldn’t tell what it was,” Williams said. “My buddy and I guessed it was a catfish.”

When the fish tired after three or four minutes of fighting, it swam right into the awaiting net manned by Wilkie. The two anglers stared at a huge largemouth bass.

“The biggest bass I had caught before this one weighed about 5 or 6 pounds,” said Williams. “I don’t know if it was the cold water or what, but this fish didn’t fight as hard as some of the 5-pound fish I’ve caught.”

The two anglers showed the bass to several other fishermen who encouraged them to have the fish weighed. on the scales at Hill’s Minnow Farm, located a small distance from second Creek, the trophy bass registered 11.2 pounds, a remarkable weight for High Rock, which has produced only two or three documented bass of that size or larger in the past 40 years.

No official lake records exist for High Rock Lake, but Williams’ fish is undoubtedly the biggest one caught with 4-pound-test line, marking another “first” for March 20 at the Yadkin River impoundment.

Williams plans to have the fish mounted, and he’s submitted a digital photo of the bass for the May issue of the North Carolina Sportsman magazine.

Tracy Adams of Wilkesboro placed third at the March 24-26 Bassmaster Southern Open at Lake Norman with 40 pounds, 4 ounces and collected $14,917.

Ron Wolfarth of Oakboro ranked sixth with 38-00 and received $9,547. Alvin Shaw of Roaring Gap finished eighth with 36-05, winning $7,160.

Other Tar Heels earning checks were Wayne Hauser of Mooresville, 13th, with 24-04 for $3,580; Maurice Freeze of Concord, 21st, with 22-12 for $2,446; Jordan Cord of Cary, 25th, with 22-03 for $2,208; Craig Chambers of Charlotte, 27th, with 21-15 for $2,088; and Bucky Helms of Dallas, 39th, with 20-04 for $1,521.

Fletcher Shryock of Newcomerstown, Ohio, won the first BASS event of his career with a three-day catch of 49-09 and collected $56,933.

Charlotte’s George Hirapetian finished second among the co-anglers with 18-07 and banked $4,773.

Other co-angler scores were Ethan Cox of West end, sixth, with 14-14 that paid $1,790; Marc Mode of Mooresville, ninth, with 13-09 that paid $1,313; Stacy Greer of Waxhaw, 23rd, with 9-10 that paid $448; Duane Rinkus of Denver, 24th, with 9-09 that paid $448; and Preston Harris of State Road, 27th, with 9-07 that paid $448.

Marty and Dusty Nester of Mt. Airy won the March 19 Fishers of Men Piedmont Division tournament at Lake Norman with 17.53 pounds and shared $1,363.50.

Kenneth and John Shumate placed second with 13.65 pounds, earning $632.

Timothy Toomey captured the March 6 American Bass Anglers N.C. West Division tournament at Tuckertown Lake with 17.13 pounds and won $303.

Richard Scott Henley won the March 20 ABA West Division event on Badin Lake with 24.88 pounds and had the big fish of the day with a 6.40-pound bass. he received $485.

I fished the National bass low entry tournament on Sunday and the fishing was pretty good. the fish are still in transition mode due to the latest storm but are starting to move up.

The larger fish seem to still be down in the 50 – 80 ft zones. Our two largest fish a 4.3 and a 4.5 came from 60ft. we threw half oz. peanut butter and jelly jigs for most of the day. If you can find the deep structure the fish will be there.

Water temp is still around 57 degrees.

Fishing Report: Back-to-back wins for Gray, Short

“I’ve been fishing with Jay Small since 1987 and never previously have we won tournaments on back to back weekends on different lakes,” Gray said.

In last week’s column, I wrote how Gray and Small conquered 39 other teams and a wind that was blowing out of the east, 180 degrees the opposite of normal, at Lopez Lake.

Last weekend was the first time Gray had fished Lake San Antonio since March 2010. Small managed to squeeze in only a few hours of practice Wednesday, his only experience at the lake in a year. The duo followed their W.O.N. Bass triumph at Lopez Lake with a ABA Pacific Coast Region triumph Saturday at San Antonio.

“it was warm during practice,” Small said. “but at the outset of the tournament, the weather was dramatically different. Gene’s boat was frozen over and the guides on our rods were clogged with ice.”

Added Gray: “I was so sure it was going to be warm that I left my winter gloves and face mask at home. I was wearing jeans and a hoody sweatshirt. that didn’t last long before I place on my heavy duty winter rain gear. When the sun did come out, it didn’t warm up straight away.”

Fishing the main lake en route to the San Antonio River, Gray and Small caught a trio of smallmouth, two on swimbaits and the other on a jerkbait. they had a limit by 8:30 a.m. But, the bite ceased until after 11 a.m.

Action picked up once they reached the river and began dragging spinnerbaits slowly through trees along the shoreline. they estimated they caught 13 to 15 fish.

They won the previous week by a margin of 7.52 pounds. on Saturday, they eked out a tournament title by just 25-hundredths of a pound. The winners’ 14-pound, 5-fish limit included two smallmouth they caught early. Gray and Small divided $2,260 in winnings.

Runner-up honors went to Bassmaster Elite pro Jared Lintner of Arroyo Grande and partner Nick Salvucci of San Miguel. only one ABA Pacific Coast tourney remains on the schedule. Salvucci will have to fish the March 26 tourney at Lopez alone as Lintner will be competing in Elite tournaments in Florida.

Lintner and Salvucci have the Central Coast Region Angler of the Year honors clinched. they have 544 points by registering one first-place finish, two seconds and a pair of thirds. Doug Chessmore (Santa Barbara) and Andy Joughin (Santa Ynez) are 31 points back in second place.

“Nick caught our big fish (3.74 pounds) by flippin. That’s how we caught all 20 to 25 fish,” said Linter, who added that it had been a year since the last time he fished San Antonio.

“I enjoy fishing lakes around home,” he said. “I plot on fishing the Angler’s choice tournament this Saturday at Santa Margarita. and when my Bassmaster schedule allows, I’ll be home for some of the upcoming local events.”

After three Angler’s choice events, Lintner and Salvucci have a 323.59 points to 322.72 for Mike Griffith of Atascadero and partner Pat Motley of Arroyo Grande. American Bass top 10, (all 5-fish limits), Weight, Winnings

i dont know why people on here buy expensive tanks and setups and then keep the cheapest feeder goldfish or tetras or bettas they can find at petco. what is your perfect freshwater fish? if i were setting up a freshwater tank for show, id do discus and black arowana. if i were limited in size to like a 55, id just get discus. idiocentrism.com/discus.jpg

for fascinating oddball fish, id get an serrasalmus elongatus or an aba aba knife. animal-world.com/encyclo/fresh/Kn…

for interaction id get a variety of large SA cichlids. dovii, jags, dempseys, and peacock bass. the peacock bass i had were the most interactive fish id owned. fins.actwin.com/fresh-pics/peacoc…

Definately cichlids. unfortunately due to the majority being very violent and territorial, it is a bit of a risk to have any other type of fish, or docile cichlid species for that matter, in your tank

angel fish and clown fish

I currently have 5 goldfish and one betta. I will be getting another betta very soon. If I could afford a bigger tank I would get guppies, platies and mollies. I find them to be very gorgeous.

Those three are just about the ugliest fish i've ever seen.

Can be the blackwater fishes! Tetras and angelfish, even dwarf gourami. because they are gorgeous, with great personality, active, and elegant in a planted aquarium.

I'm a grown up who hasn't felt the need to show off since high school.

If i could I would keep a Motor Ray
whozoo.org/Intro2000/iankirk/…

or a Giant Gourami

MATTHEWS’ PICKS OF THE WEEK

1. One more week? Hesperia Lake remains in the No. 1 spot againthis week because it cranked out at least six trout over 12 pounds, including a 25-pounder. quite a few nice stringers reported, too. When you add in the chance at a sturgeon from 10 to 40 pounds aftera plant of these ancient fish last week, you continue to have theregionÆs number one pick. For an update on the action, check withthe store at 800-521-6332 or 760-244-5951.

2. San DiegoÆs saltwater fleet wedges its way back into the toppicks with an excellent rockfish bite for all boats running intoMexican waters û from the half-day boats to the 1 1/2-day trips.the quality and volume of the red rockfish, lings, and cows isexcellent. Check with 976-tuna.com for the latest on these tripsand contact information.

Quality striped bass have been showing in very excellent numbersin the Willow Beach stretch of the Colorado River for the past twoweeks, including what should have been a lull period after the fullmoon. the fish are showing on the big trout-like cranks and swimbaits in the Mile Marker 50 to 52 stretch. Best this past week wasa 27-pounder. For an update on this action, call the Willow BeachResort at 928-767-4747.

TROUT: this is the peak of the stocking season for most ofSouthern CaliforniaÆs urban trout waters and the bite is excellent toexcellent a lot of places. the sleeper pick of the week is stillLake Cachuma which has been heavily stocked this year and producinga lot of limits for excellent trout anglers. Top urban bets are HesperiaLake with trout over 20 pounds again, Santa Ana River Lakes withtwo trout over 20 pounds this week, Irvine Lake, Corona Lake,Laguna Niguel Park Lake, and Jess Ranch. other excellent bets includeDiamond Valley, and in San Diego County, Jennings, Dixon, Wohlfordand Poway are all getting regular plants.

BLACK BASS: there have been a number of very excellent bass bites forthe season. While most of the action is still mostly in deep wateron ice-jigs, slow-fished plastics, or bait in deep water, the bitehas been excellent at Casitas, Piru, Perris, and Diamond Valley. Allwaters with trout also could crank out a big bass on a trout-likeswimbait. on the Colorado River, the Lake Havasu bite has brokenopen on live shad with 15 to 30 fish days reported this past weekon both smallies and largemouth. the Casitas bite on live shadslowed with the shad disappeared from the surface.

STRIPED BASS: there have been some overall improvements at SoCalstriper waters, but the best news comes from Willow Beach wherefish to 27 pounds have been caught in the past week in a prettydecent bite on quality fish. other excellent best are Pyramid forsmaller fish to three pounds, decent action at Skinner, also onschoolie-sized fish, and improving action at Castaic. DiamondValley has been the slowest of the lot. Further away, San Antoniowas still tough, but the California aqueduct near Taft has beenfair on bloodworms with a few bigger fish on artificials.

PANFISH: Redear and bluegill bites are still slow mosteverywere, with the exception on Lake Perris, which came back onthis week. ItÆs also time to start watching the crappie action at anumber of places. Lake Henshaw produced its first crappie of theseason two weeks ago and its first excellent stringer of 16 fish thisweek. Cachuma and Casitas both need to be watched with the warmerweather, and the Buena Vista Lakes near Taft are also starting toproduce a few fish.

CATFISH: slow bites just about everywhere in urban plantedwaters or local water supply reservoirs with very light fishingpressure. the channel and flathead action is also slow all alongthe Colorado River, but all the canals are back to normal flows.the one bright spot? Lake IsabellaÆs usual winter catfish bitelooks to be kicking into gear.

For Outdoor News Service

LONG RANGE AWESOME: the excellent long range tuna actioncontinues for the boats out of San Diego making 10-day and longertrips. Anglers aboard the Royal Polaris reported in Tuesday withgood action on 140 to 190 pound fish and a handful from 200-plus toaround 350 pounds. Add in excellent wahoo action on fish to 60-pluspounds. the Royal Star, American Angler, and Excel are all alsoseeing similar results.

MEXICO ROCKFISH BRILLIANT: the rockfish action in Mexican watersfor San Diego-based boats has been exceptional. While Californiawaters are currently closed for the bottom species, the Mexicanbite is unhindered by regulations that are less about protectingresources than making some environmentalists pleased. the overnightto 1 1/2-day trips are seeing limits of red rockfish from three toeight pounds, cow cod from 12 to 15 pounds, and lings from 12 to 20pounds on these trips. Add in a smattering of yellowtail on thesetrips. Even the half-day and three-quarter day boats are fishingcloser to San Diego and getting excellent scores, albeit on somewhatsmaller average fish. a couple of scores to illustrate how goodthis bite has been: the Legend had 30 anglers on a 1 1/2-day tripand it returned with 162 rockfish and 46 lings. the 3/4-day SanDiego with just six anglers returned with 34 rockfish, 15 redsnapper, six sheephead, and four ling cod. the longer trips of two-to 2 1/2-days are seeing even better fishing off Colonet.

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA LOCAL: While the water is still very coldalong the local coastline, the spring-like weather this past weekhas resulted in some flurries of decent bass action off Dana Pointand kelp and rocky spots from the Santa Monica Bay to San Diego.the Balboa Angling Club also recorded its first white seabass thisweek. But most landings are sending few boats out because of therockfish closure. there are regular sand dab trips at a number oflandings along the coast, and there has been a great light-tacklebite on these fish with catches of 30-plus per rod common.

SQUID EVERYWHERE-ISLAND UPDATE: Bait-size squid are showing inexceptional numbers all along the Southern California coastline andlocal islands. Most boats are using this candy bait on their tripsto Catalina and finding a excellent bite on the perch, a few bonito, anda few calico bass on the kelp lines when the tides is runningright. But even with the squid, the yellowtail and seabass are veryquiet.
